  • Overview

    The Manager, Gemstone Acquisition is responsible for maintaining the flow and organization of work to and from the Pearl and Color Grading lab and effectively managing lab output to ensure that Tiffany and Co. gemological standards are met.  The Manager will be responsible for procurement of gemstones and ensure that quality parameters are established and maintained.  He/she will have strong project management skill set, and will collaborate with cross functional departments to manage product development projects from innovation to completion. The Manager will cross train with peer team members to achieve department goals and initiatives. The lab manager will be looked to mentor, develop and train all members of the gemstone lab team.

    Responsibilities

    Lab Management

    • Perform priority analysis on a weekly basis for the grading team, and identify capacity constraints.
    • Manage the prioritizing of work to graders based on skill level and provide gemological support to expeditiously move product through the grading process.
    • Monitor quality issues in the lab and identify any concerns that will affect productivity.
    • Analyze daily grading outputs in order to improve productivity levels, while maintaining standards. Identify and report high volume rejections to management. 
    • Oversees the repair/external lab/ and polishing coordination and maintains communication with management team to confirm gemstone needs are processed and ensures requests are fulfilled.
    • Collaborate with operations to ensure elimination of bottlenecks, and ensure the smooth flow of gemstones and work throughout the department.  

    Gemstone Review/Grading

    • Perform supplier performance reviews, and report regular feedback to management. Perform regular cost analysis, and submit standard cost updates. Ensures the reconciliation of supplier issues and discrepancies.  
    • Propose, implement, and monitor grading staff training programs to ensure graders are properly trained and adhering to defined procedures.
    • Provides subject matter expertise in Tiffany Quality Parameters and support the development of quality standards for new product as required. Perform regular spot checks to ensure these specifications are adhered to.    
    • Maintain internal grading references and updates cross functional departments as needed.
    • Reviews Quality Assurance guidelines on a yearly basis and reviews parameters for Retail.
    • Keeps abreast of new enhancements and developments in the industry.

    Processes and Procedures

    • Develops and maintains a centralized sharepoint for short/long term and on-going project operations. Research and Manages new projects as needed.
    • Productively propose, implement, and monitor Gemstone Acquisition grading and buying procedures.
    • Assists in inventory control and cycle count and checks all gemstones on high value 45K report on a rotating basis.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Staff Management

    • Ensure operational efficiencies, and that GA reaches department goals and ensure on time deliveries for repeatable demand.
    • Train, develop, and coach staff to perform at peak efficiency, providing management with reporting on a regular basis.
    • Contributes to staff development by ensuring that appropriate training for new species and special project parameters are achieved.
    • Collaborates with peers to provide ongoing coaching and feedback utilizing the performance management process principles.
    • Assist management with employee feedback and communication loop. 

    Qualifications

    • Undergraduate degree
    • Gemological Degree (Graduate Gemologist).
    • 5-7 years plus gemstone grading experience.
    • 3-5 years direct management experience
    • Ability to make sound gemological assessments for all species.
    • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel).
    • Basic Materials Resource Planning (MRP) knowledge.
    • Ability to travel based on business needs.
    • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, follow-up and problem solving skills.
    • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities.
    • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Experience in project and/or process management in a leadership capacity.
